Woman In Search of Long Underwear

New in Lincoln and a new job with the Nebraska Game and Parks has made me think about some new purchases.  Working in the Outdoor Education department one of the questions asked of me is do I have a good pair of Long Johns (aka Thermal underwear or long underwear) as I spent last Saturday outside at our Catching Fire Archery Event.  My answer of course was no.  I am the type that likes to spend most of the winter …

Goin’ to the Dogs on The Great Outdoor Radio Show

On The Great Outdoor Radio Show I host Saturday morning, we’ll  be goin’ to the dogs, or, I should say, they’ll be coming in-studio! It’s all about hunting dogs, puppies, hunting dog training and the unique small munsterlander breed with friends Kris Hill of the Hunting Hills Kennel near Brainard and Pam Robinson of Robingun Kennels near Lincoln along with a small munsterlander or two, of course. Thanks to top-notch photographer Mario Robinson for the use of his pics from prior …

So, Why Do You Hunt?

Just last night, after returning home from my outdoor TV gig at Omaha’s WOWT Channel 6, and unloading my vehicle filled with various pieces of waterfowl hunting gear/TV props (goose decoys, layout blinds, camouflage clothing, etc.), a new neighbor and I got to talking. After exchanging pleasantries and ‘small talk,’  she asked me the question: “So, why do you hunt?” I explained to her that hunting is who I am, it is part of my fabric and I conveyed to her my deep, eternal affection of and the connections I have …

The Dog Makes the Hunt

For me, watching and hanging out with a good hunting dog really makes the hunt! This week I went Canada goose hunting with friends along Nebraska’s Platte River corridor in western Douglas County and thoroughly enjoyed Buddy, a three year-old black labrador retriever. The moment I entered the blind, I instantly fell in love with Buddy! Here’s Buddy at work having fun on a goose retrieve. Buddy and I after one of Buddy’s face-licking sessions on me, HA! Whenever you …

First Snow

With the season open few things can compare to the joy a pheasant hunter feels when he or she wakes up to a landscape covered in a few inches of fluffy snow – especially the first such event of the season.  Those of us truly addicted to chasing-the-cackle do our darnedest to be in the field on these special mornings and for some this past weekend was when this glorious happening occurred. For some reason the first snow of the …

Great Plains Connections: Deer Season

I love deer season to the point that it’s really all I can think about – I even dream about deer hunting, when I’m working I wish I was out deer hunting; every spare minute is spent in the field. Opening weekend our son, grandson and son-in-law and two granddaughters head to the family farm for a weekend of white tailed deer hunting. This typically means that my opening weekend consists of spending time with the grand kids – they …

The Best Gifts

Last year I listed my top 5 items to avoid for the outdoor-women & sportsmen on your list.  I still stand by them. However, this year just prior to Halloween I received my first Christmas catalog from a large outdoor retailer.  About the same time a third zipper failed on my deer hunting backpack, I busted through a major seam on one of my favorite pair of hunting boots, and my headlamp took a swim in a nearby duck marsh …

Meat for the Freezer

I don’t get nearly as excited as I used to about deer season. Once upon a time, I hunted all day, every day, though the 9 days of rifle season, hoping to find a trophy buck. In recent seasons, my hunts have lasted a few days. The main goal now is to put a little meat in the freezer. It’s not that I’m too old to hunt that hard, although some will grin as they tell me I am. Life …

Thanksgiving

Before I head out the door for the Thanksgiving holiday, let me share some thoughts with you. . . . The holiday feast we are going to celebrate this week is one that is uniquely American.  I will not bore you with all the old stories we learned in school, but it is our history, from the pilgrims to Presidents Washington, Lincoln and FDR this has been designated as a special day set aside for the celebration of harvest and …

Rooster Pinch

To me the week of thanksgiving means chasing pheasant.  And by this time of the season pheasants have become wily critters that make a living…well…staying alive.  In fact, it doesn’t take very long after opening day shots are fired for the roosters to begin to use some crafty ways of dodging the hunter – both two and four-legged.  This holds even more true in years when fewer young pheasants are on the landscape.  This is when a it’s time to …
