Earth Day? 2015

I have a couple of calendars in my office that have something about “Earth Day” scribbled on the square dated April 22, 2015.  I have taken a cynical view of “Earth Day” in the past, have reflected that in my blog, and do not feel any differently today.  Let me tell you why. . . . Earlier this week I stopped at a stop-light and watched the pig in the car in front of me squash out his cigarette and …

Window to Nature

I’ve been in the field a lot archery/crossbow spring wild turkey hunting from a portable, camouflaged, pop-up blind in rural eastern Nebraska. As I always say “hunting is not about the harvest, but the experience.” It has been an exciting experience seeing nature in early spring! Here are just some of the various wildlife species we’ve seen. Take a look with us through the lens. Before I began this blog, I was going to list all the reasons why I deeply love spring turkey hunting. After much reflection, I …

Spring Break: Sporting Clays, Pheasants, Chukars, Fun and Memories

To get young people ‘outdoors’ these days, you have to be flexible and take advantage of any windows of opportunity that are there. Such was the case this past week when my 17 year-old Son Noah, a junior at Omaha’s Creighton Prep High School, had spring break. Noah had been bugging me to take him hunting in some fashion over his break from school. As adult sportsmen and women we all need to make time in our own busy schedules to take kids to the …

Hunting with the Right Folks

We didn’t get a lot of geese, but if there was a limit on laughter we’d be way over the max. — Mark Davis, Outdoor Writer and Photojournalist for the Omaha World-Herald, reflecting on a recent Canada goose hunt.  The camaraderie part of hunting is big. Your companions can make or break a hunt. The choices you make in whom you share a blind with will ultimately determine your level of satisfaction. Trust me, it only takes one jerk to ruin a hunting trip. I’ve …

Adventure Report, From the Field, January 2015

In recent weeks I have spent some time away from the computer, some time in the field and on the water doing a variety of things.  There is too much to tell in one blog post, so let me break it up and begin with a quick report from the field. . . . It will disappoint some of my fur-harvesting friends, but I have to honestly confess to you that right now I am a casual fur harvester.  My trapping …

An Outdoor Challenge for 2015

Resolutions are popular this time of year, both in their making and breaking. I have a few annual resolutions myself: get organized and spend more time outdoors.  Ok…being as creative as I am about the placement and random storage of needed items, getting organized by the standard definition is a pipe dream.  But I do plan on increasing my time outside. And making it better, too, by measuring it differently this year.  I challenge you to do the same… How …
