The Bright Side of Fall Fishing

I won’t lie; the fishing has been real hit-and-miss as of late. There are lots and lots of shad everywhere you look, which naturally makes things difficult to begin with. Add in the cool weather and several inches of rain we’ve gotten, and conditions have gotten a bit tougher. Traditional patterns like live-baiting shad and trolling crankbaits are not producing the fish we are used to this time of year, and success has been spotty. The nice thing about this …

Reel ’em in Roadtrip: Labor Day Weekend

With high expectations Commissioner Burke and I spent a few hours on the water at Johnson Lake to kick off the holiday weekend. Trolling is the method we prefer, however after two-plus hours we drew the big goose egg! Saturday morning I left Johnson early to meet the Forney brothers and son Shane at Lake McConaughy. The walleye bite has been strong all summer and I always enjoy outings with a new group. Trolling nine hours produced four good catfish and, finally, the last …

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission (NGPC) has many family fishing events across the state each year including two Carp-O-Rama events; one at Pawnee State Recreation Area (SRA) near Lincoln and Lake Maloney SRA south of North Platte, both provide a great opportunity for the public to get out and see what carp fishing is all about. Reel ’em in Roadtrip: Dog Days of Summer

Our kids were all home this past week, and family time and Johnson Lake time go hand in hand with the Berggrens. Grandkids enjoy the water dragon, and our kids still enjoy going for a pull. Jeanne and I even took our turn! The gulls are just starting to arrive so surface activity should heat up this week. Persistence really paid off over the weekend as we opted to troll searching for white bass. Continuing to change speed and lure selection finally hit …

Thought for the Weekend

Have you ever been in one of those awkward social situations where you are among a group of people and you are supposed to mingle and talk, but you just really have nothing to talk about? Here is my excuse. . . . I saved this quote, I believe Matt Straw made it in some In-Fisherman article or on-line story.  I do not remember where.  But, I thought it was really good advice when you walk into a room and …

Robinson Reports: Back to Normalcy

July 4th is in the books, which means summer is truly here in full force. Right? For the most part, that is a true statement. Some ‘regular’ patterns for catching fish this time of year are really dominant. Things like catching suspended walleyes and catfish that are getting ready to spawn are normal right now. What isn’t normal is some of the temps we’ve had and will continue to have. Will much cooler than normal temps this coming week, it …

Thought for the Weekend

My sister posted this quote on her FaceBook page months ago.  It is attributed to a Chinese philosopher: The mark of a successful man is one that has spent an entire day on the bank of a river without feeling guilty about it. Amen!  That is really good advise for the weekend, any weekend, especially if you have a fishing rod in your hand! GO FISH!
