It’s On!

LMBassIce2018

Just want to get a quick blog post up today and say that we’ve got ice and our ice-fishing season is “on”! My “New Year’s Day 2018” was deep in the Nebraska sandhills.  I see these news stories about New Year babies and so forth, well here’s mine, first fish of the year! No, it was not a big bass, but it was the first fish of the New Year, it hit shortly after dropping a bait down an ice …

Ice Fishing Clinics 2018

IMG_0655

I wandered back into the office today; it was hard knowing we have ice and I should be fishing!!!!! However, one thing I need to do is tell you about our upcoming ice-fishing clinics.  Yes, it looks like we have ice and these clinics will go as scheduled! I promise, I will be off the ice long enough to be present at the classroom clinic in Kearney on Saturday night.  Believe what the “show bill” says, some of Nebraska’s best …

Nebraska Ice-Fishing on Jason Mitchell Outdoors, Part Two

20170208_181111

A couple of months ago I called attention to a Jason Mitchell Outdoors ice-fishing episode that was filmed in Nebraska, Ice Fishing Nebraska on Jason Mitchell Outdoors! I was privileged to be present for much of the taping last winter, so I knew there was more to come.  Here it is! As mentioned in the video, we had the full spectrum of weather conditions while filming, “There is No Place Like Nebraska”!  Part of the time the wind blew so …

Martial Arts Training

I was surfing the web the other day looking for a new workout program for both me and my fishing equipment.  I found one, it is pretty rigorous. . . . https://www.facebook.com/mudhole/videos/1583678128342452/ Sure hope that propane tank does not go off. Would hate to see what that guy does when he loses a fish. Reminded me of some old commercials; maybe your fishing equipment needs a workout in order to survive your wife? I have one Ugly Stik rod, have had …

Long Rod River Trout

TroutCrop

I have never fished for steelhead.  Someday?  Maybe, but not yet. However, as a pointy-headed fisheries biologist, I will tell you that rainbow trout and steelhead are the same fish, Oncorhynchus mykiss, a steelhead ain’t nothing more than a rainbow trout that migrates to the sea.  That line of distinction becomes even more blurred when one considers that inland rainbow trout have been documented to have the same migratory behavior.  In fact, some of the inland rainbows most famous for …

Sharpening Hooks

DSCN5525

I have fished for a few years now; long enough to realize that oftentimes little things make a huge difference!  The learning never stops, even in a lifetime of fishing, and the best anglers know and do so many of the little things that they do not even think about them–“Why do you do this or that?”  “I don’t know, because I always have.”  The best have forgotten more things than most anglers will ever know. Sharp hooks are one …

Ice Fishing Nebraska on Jason Mitchell Outdoors!

JasonMitchellOutdoorsNebraskaBLG

Last winter I told you about a little trip I took to the beautiful Nebraska sandhills; a trip to assist with some filming for a TV fishing show, TV Ice Fishing. Obviously, that filming was done for a couple of ice-fishing episodes for Jason Mitchell Outdoors.  The filming last winter was done for ice-fishing episodes that will be airing this ice season.  Well, they started airing ice-fishing episodes on Jason Mitchell Outdoors a couple of weeks ago, and the second …

“Big, Big Weekend Out at the Lodge”!

DSCN5057

Quick blog post just before I head out the door.  Got a big, long weekend ahead of me.  If you want an idea of what I will be doing. . . . Yep, I will be helping empower women by teaching them outdoor skills!  And proud of it!  It is very rewarding and a lot of fun! I know it is not fair for me to mention this now, because if you are a woman and are interested, it is …

It Is All About the Eatin’!

FallFlathead1

No matter how you define it, we are now in the fall season.  There are no calendars in nature; seasons gradually morph from one into another.  Below the surface of our Nebraska waters, fall started weeks ago. I know folks are busy with a lot of activities in the fall, and many of them will reach for their sticks & strings, scatter guns, and smoke poles rather than fishing poles.  Just know that fall provides some of the best open-water …

Our FaceBook Live broadcasts have gone well, so we are going to do another one!   Tune in to our Game & Parks FaceBook page at 12:00 central time, tomorrow, Friday, September 22, and I will answer fish and fishing questions as fast as I can for thirty minutes, and then follow-up with some more on-line after that.
