Amazing Technology

P2160034

I am still just playing around with a depth-finder in my ice hole.  However, I realize that fishing electronics have advanced by leaps in recent years.  It is amazing what you can see on some of the “tools” available right now: You never know what you will find looking down an ice hole! Have a great weekend everyone!  Stay warm!

Hang On!

DSCN4262

If you have been ice-fishing for any amount of time, you probably have a story or three about an ice shack blowing away.  It goes something like this: If you want to watch another one follow this LINK . Of course those remind me of some stories. . . . I watched a couple of guys try to pop-up a shelter on the ice during one gale.  They spread it out on the ice and the skinny, little guy got …

Ice Propulsion

P1200046

Some of you that fish ice tournaments may need a way to beat your competition to the hot hole. Or maybe you just want to get a jump on the weekend warriors? Could be you just need to beat your buddy to the tip-up? Well, I got an idea for you. . . . Notice “safety first”–make sure the ice is safe and wear your helmet. Not sure about the language in the subheadings, but I am guessing it says …

When They Do Not Take It Seriously

PB290014

I have blogged several times about how everyone needs a good net man, and a good photographer.  Unfortunately, some never take their responsibilities seriously.  What you can do about that? Most of us could tell horror stories.  I can remember one nice walleye, the only walleye of the day, that got knocked off by my net man. It is even worse when you are netting your own! When it happens, and it will,  there will be mental and emotional anguish.  …

Names

DSCN0584

I have a nephew who just had a baby.  Well, actually, you know his wife had the baby.  It is their first, a boy, they named him “Colter”.  I like it. It reminded me of this meme I stole from the interwebs: I always said I thought a good name for a boy would be “Remington Winchester”.  No one has listened to me. Actually, if I was going to name a boy after a fishing lure it might be “Rapala”.  …

Otters

ax204_190f_9

I have had several blogs about Nebraska mustelids (members of the weasel family).  Badgers and skunks have provided some entertaining encounters, and I often share a shoreline with a semi-aquatic mink while I am fishing.  Mink were one of my Gramps Roth’s favorite catches on his trap line, and they have been for me too. There is another semi-aquatic mustelid that I am still waiting to run into–otters. On a couple of occasions at Calamus Reservoir, I believe I saw …

Saxsquatch

IMG_1211

It was just earlier this year that I learned that Big Foot’s name was Daryl! Good name. Now, I find out he also plays the sax! If that does not mellow you for the weekend, he has a whole YouTube channel, Saxsquatch! And, be sure to check out his website for all the CD’s, even old records and of course T-shirts! Many of you know that Sasquatch (and a variety of other wild creatures) guard some of my best fishing …

Funniest Place on Earth

IMG_1104

I have seen a lot of funny things happen at boat ramps.  The hotter, busier the boat ramp, the better it gets. Watched a fiberglass inboard/outboard get deposited about ten feet short of the water one time.  The crunching sound sent shivers up my back. Another time it was a husband and wife team, the greatest entertainment potential.  No matter what, they could not get the boat to come off the trailer.  Back it in deeper, rev the boat motor, …

My Idea of Social Distancing

DSCN2850a

I do not understand why, but I have had several fishing partners accuse me of being “anti-social”.  They think I am always off fishing 200 yards away, by myself. I do not know what they are talking about, but yes, this is my idea of “social distancing”: https://www.facebook.com/mysterytacklebox/videos/693289968107736/ Which, by the way, has been hard to do with all the folks fishing during this coronavirus stuff. As you can see, that video came off of Mystery Tackle Box‘s FaceBook page.  …

“Shoulda Been Here Yesterday”

PA080003

One of the biggest tricks to being successful on the water or in the field is figuring out how to be in the right place at the right time.  I know a good stick who once said he would rather spend a couple hours on a good spot at the right time than all day at the wrong time. So what is the right time? Well, I know waiting to hear it in an “outdoor report” is the surest way …
