Big game harvest records set in 2016

LINCOLN, Neb. – Big game hunters had a record year in Nebraska in 2016 with all-time high harvest marks set for mule deer bucks, cow elk and total elk. Deer – A total of 58,126 deer were harvested in 2016, including 11,184 mule deer. Mule deer buck harvest increased 4 percent to 9,257, breaking the previous record set in 2009. Record mule deer buck harvest occurred in the Frenchman, Plains, Platte and Upper Platte units. Whitetail harvest totaled 46,942 deer, …

Big game meetings scheduled across Nebraska

LINCOLN – Hunters and landowners are encouraged to offer their feedback on big game issues during the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission’s public informational meetings in December. Meetings are scheduled in each Game and Parks district. Biologists will explain and take questions on several topics, including deer management, deer damage and depredation permits, antlerless harvest, trophy management and diseases. Wild Elk Being Monitored

LINCOLN – A wild elk observed in the South Bend, Neb., area is being monitored for public safety by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. The elk’s proximity to Interstate 80 and major roadways is a public safety concern. The wild elk is not part of the herd at the Wildlife Safari Park. Information Wanted for Poached Bull Elk

By Justin Haag Nebraska Game and Parks Commission LINCOLN – Conservation officers are seeking information in the investigation of the illegal killing and abandonment of a bull elk in northwestern Nebraska during the opening weekend of firearm deer season. The elk was found dead west of Crawford on the Peterson Wildlife Management Area, a 2,460-acre property managed by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission for public hunting. Elk Collared in North-Central Nebraska

LINCOLN – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission recently placed tracking collars on 11 elk in north-central Nebraska. The collars provide real-time location data and help Game and Parks better determine populations. Game and Parks contracted a helicopter animal capture crew to tranquilize and place GPS tracking collars and ear tags on the animals.
