Harvested a Doe, Let’s Chat on Twitter

I harvested a nice, healthy, adult white-tailed deer doe this morning with a firearm at the request of a landowner friend in Nebraska’s 2014 River Antlerless Deer Hunting Season. Saw a pretty good number of deer! Hey, let’s talk about Nebraska deer hunting or anything related to Nebraska’s outdoors LIVE online via a Twitter chat this Wednesday, October 8th from Noon to 1 p.m. CST. Key Messages for Archery Deer Hunters on WOWT 6 Outdoors

I’ll be covering key messages for Nebraska’s popular archery deer hunting season opener on my WOWT 6 News 6 Outdoor Report this week. The season is well underway, it opened Sept. 1!  One of the messages I’ll be relaying to fellow deer hunters this season is the importance of wearing a tree stand safety harness. My friends at Outdoor Life magazine say it’s vital to be an educated “smart dummy” and use a safety harness if you’re going to be hunting from an elevated …

Last Chance Deer Camp

In deer hunting years I am 24 seasons old, as another came to an end just recently. It was a good year that brought with it some challenges, some successes and a whole bunch of memories. Thanks to our partners at the Crane Trust, Inc. near Wood River, I got to end it in the best way imaginable – at the Last Chance Youth Deer Camp. This was the second year for this event, which takes place on the final …

One Look was Worth a 1000 Words

I had the pleasure of taking fourteen year old Kaely Perkins of North Platte (she attends Maywood schools), hunting for her first deer this past firearm season. It all started when I was looking for an irrigation engine at Fairbanks International in North Platte, where Kaely’s Dad, Roger Perkins is a salesman. We started talking about hunting and the next thing we knew a date was set for Kaely to come deer hunting on our farm. This wasn’t Kaely’s first outing …

Great Plains Connections: Deer Season

I love deer season to the point that it’s really all I can think about – I even dream about deer hunting, when I’m working I wish I was out deer hunting; every spare minute is spent in the field. Opening weekend our son, grandson and son-in-law and two granddaughters head to the family farm for a weekend of white tailed deer hunting. This typically means that my opening weekend consists of spending time with the grand kids – they …

Meat for the Freezer

I don’t get nearly as excited as I used to about deer season. Once upon a time, I hunted all day, every day, though the 9 days of rifle season, hoping to find a trophy buck. In recent seasons, my hunts have lasted a few days. The main goal now is to put a little meat in the freezer. It’s not that I’m too old to hunt that hard, although some will grin as they tell me I am. Life …

Deer Heart: As Good as Tenderloin!

Did you save the heart of that deer you harvested this season or did you toss it in the gut pile for the coyotes? Next time, save it, trust me! Venison heart is “muscle meat” and is as good as a piece of tenderloin! Packed with B vitamins and protein, with little fat, and a very mild flavor, venison heart is positively delicious if prepared properly! It’s actually simple to make, is best eaten fresh, not frozen, at least within a …

Wind Games

As I readied myself for the evening deer hunt the strong west winds kept hitting me with the dried-up corn leaves left behind by the combine that had passed through the field 4 days earlier.  Perfect for the Alli Way stand.  I found relief from the wind, and the dust it was kicking up, once I dropped down beside a tall north-south bluff on my walk in.  The day was warm but I made my elevated perch and hadn’t worked …
