State Record Summary, 2023

StateRecordRodReelWhitePerchOct2023c

We are a month into 2024 already.  Let me summarize the state record fish we had caught in Nebraska last year. One Last Entry Invariably, as soon as I post a state record update a new entry hits my desk.  Last fall was no exception.  My last update was in October and I posted a postscript to that update.  I had received news of a new state record right after that blog was posted.  At that time I teased that …

Sandhill Wetlands

A month ago I blogged about the Wetlands of Nebraska.  Shared a video about the different types of wetlands in Nebraska and their importance.  That video was just in introduction to a series of videos going into more detail about the different types of wetlands. I want to return to that topic today and highlight one particular type of Nebraska wetland, sandhills wetlands.  Yep, there is another video.  This one longer and more detail, but you really need to take …

State Record Update, Spring 2023

StateRecordCommonCarpRodReelApi2023d

I have not given a state record update since last year’s summary.  Right now I do not have a lot to update, but I never know when applications will come in.  If I wait for more, it could be months before I do an update.  So, might as well tell you about what I have. . . . Back in April, Chuck Hensel from Valentine was fishing Merritt Reservoir.  He caught a common carp that beat the old state record …

Hackberry Renovation

P7110038

Several of you have asked about last week’s renovation project at Hackberry Lake on the Valentine National Wildlife Refuge.  I was there, helped a little bit, took some pictures. . . . First of all, some context:  If you are not aware of the work being done on the Valentine Refuge, it has been cussed and discussed over and over.  Please go back and read this, Valentine National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) Update.  If you are unfamiliar with rotenone renovations in …

What’s Swimming Out There?

SilverCarpc

In recent years we have tightened up some of our baitfish regulations.  Simply put, in eastern Nebraska, you pretty much cannot collect your own baitfish and use them in any waters other than the water from which they were collected.  Of course, many wonder why we are so restrictive? Let me tell you that invasive species are a huge threat to our fisheries.  They are such a threat that they can keep a fisheries biologist awake at night.  Without exception, …

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission has declared a fish salvage for Hackberry Lake on the Valentine National Wildlife Refuge south of Valentine from Dec. 18, 2020, through Sept. 30, 2021. State Record Summary, 2019

StateRecordPaddlefishArcheryJune2019d

I got to thinking. . . . I have not given a summary of state record fish certified in 2019.  Time to do that. . . . Four fish were certified as new state records in 2019. Surface Spearfishing No new state record fish were taken by surface spearfishing in 2019. Underwater Spearfishing One fish taken by underwater spearfishing was certified as a state record in 2019, a 1 pound 12 ounce redear sunfish taken from a private pond in …

State Record Update, June 2019

StateRecordPaddlefishArcheryJune2019d

Been a long time since I mentioned what is new on the state record front.  Got three new state records to tell you about.  Let’s start with a couple of rod & reel records: The first to hit my desk this year came back in April.  Scott McGuire from Grant pushed our tiger trout record even higher, just short of 5 pounds now, 4 pounds 14 ounces. Scott’s fish was 24 inches long, and was caught from the North Platte …

A Couple of Updates, Nov. 2, 2018

Cunningham Lake

I know what I am going to post will be of interest to only a couple of small areas of Nebraska, but if you are one of the anglers within those small areas, these news releases will be of interest to you.  I also realize that these news items have been making the rounds and many are already aware, but something else I have learned after several years of blogging is that the more you can “spread the word” the …
