Prescribed burns are planned this spring on many Nebraska Game and Parks Commission wildlife management areas, state parks and state recreation areas where weather allows. Historically, wildlife habitats were shaped by wildfires that occurred throughout the year. Burns can help set back undesirable plants that invade native woodlands and prairies, as well as other grass and wooded areas. Brush pile to be burned at Mormon Island SRA

LINCOLN, Neb. – A brush pile of storm-damaged trees will be burned at Mormon Island State Recreation Area in Hall County on Jan. 22. The burn, which will begin at about 7 a.m., will eliminate fuels and small predator habitat and keep the area open for continued tree management.

LINCOLN, Neb. – Parks staff of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will burn brush piles, as weather allows, at several central Nebraska state recreation areas (SRA). Burns will take place at Calamus Reservoir SRA, Fort Kearny SRA, Mormon Island SRA, Windmill SRA and Victoria Springs SRA. LINCOLN – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will burn brush piles, as weather and snow cover allow, at several sites across the state. Brush piles are created by the removal of invading trees in grassland or timber stands or from trees damaged in storms. Removal of brush piles will open grasslands and timber for continued management, eliminate a wildfire fuel source and eliminate sites conducive to the germination of noxious and invasive plants.
