News Updates, Oct. 26, 2022

DSCN4069

Seems like most of my blog posts this fall have been news items.  I know most of them do not impact a lot of anglers or other users.  But, if you are one who it will impact, you will want to know.  And, I know these things often “fall through the cracks”.  So, in no particular order: Olive Creek areas remains open after wildfire Olive Creek State Recreation Area and Olive Creek Wildlife Management Area in southwestern Lancaster County will …

Burchard Update

P9040032

I hesitate to post this because after Oct. 15 the road to the boat ramp and around the reservoir is closed.  In addition, the latest word I heard this morning is there is still nothing happening yet.  But, we keep hearing that it is coming: Burchard Lake road improvement project to begin Oct. 17 A road repair project at Burchard Lake Wildlife Management Area in Pawnee County is scheduled to begin Oct. 17. Access to roads, the campground and boat ramp …

Access Updates

EF20150721_146

I have a couple, three news releases I want to highlight.  These all deal with access to different fisheries and I know the news is making the rounds.  Yes, many of you already know about these.  But, I learned a long time ago that when a person thinks word has gotten around to everyone, it has not.  So, if you already know about these, just ignore me.  If not, this will affect some of your fall fishing: Calamus Reservoir boat …

Burchard Road

EF20150721_146

I know some of my blog topics are of interest to a relatively small audience.  I also know that if you are one of those in that small audience it can be very important to you.  Consequently, I believe it is important to spread the word about some of these “little things”, because, well, I know often the word does not get spread. In this case, I am referring to the road leading to Burchard Reservoir in southeast Nebraska.  Burchard …

Oh Happy Day!

Without a doubt Burchard Reservoir is one of our best fisheries in southeast Nebraska.  The reservoir has a watershed comprised almost entirely of grass and because of that, even though it is a relatively old reservoir, it maintains excellent water quality, great habitat including an abundance of aquatic vegetation, and quality fishing for largemouth bass, panfish and channel catfish.  Over the years, the outlet structure on the Burchard dam had deteriorated to the point that it needed replaced.  That project was …

Is the new boat ramp at Burchard open yet?

One of the most popular questions in my office this week is the one that titles this blog post.  Folks assume that since it has been raining, the new boat ramp at Burchard must be open already: Burchard Lake filling slowly– boat ramp remains closed An aquatic habitat rehabilitation project at Burchard Reservoir a couple of years ago required an 11-foot draw down to repair the outlet structure.  During the project, enough water remained in the reservoir to maintain the …

Burchard News

I know many Nebraska anglers have been eagerly awaiting the re-opening of Burchard Reservoir.  Here is some news, and a date on that re-opening, BUT READ CAREFULLY.  There is both good news and “bad news” in this announcement; make sure you know what it all means. Burchard WMA to open to access July 1st Burchard Wildlife Management Area will be opened to limited public access beginning July 1, 2013.  An aquatic habitat rehabilitation project was completed earlier this year on …

Some Updates, June 10, 2013

I have a couple of quick updates about some of Nebraskan’s favorite fishing spots to share with you. . . . Burchard First of all, read this closely, Burchard is NOT OPEN, yet.  For the past several weeks that has been, by far, the most frequent question I and my co-workers have been asked.  That is OK, I am glad people want to know! We are still waiting on water levels at Burchard to rise.  Yes, we have had significant …
