Trout Slam Update, May 2018

TroutSlamCuttDonaldElliott

It was a couple of months ago when I blogged about our first angler to complete the new Trout Slam, First Trout Slam Completed.  Let me catch you up on where we are now: We have had four more anglers complete the Trout Slam, Timothy Engelland from Gering, and his wife Roxanne, Chris Nelson from Alliance, and Donald Elliott from Fremont.  Congratulations to all, and yes, we finally got the hat pins and certificates, they will be coming in the …

First Trout Slam Completed!

JustinPowellTroutSlamBrook

It was only a month ago that we introduced our new angler recognition program–the Nebraska Trout Slam.  At the end of my blog post on the subject I challenged to see who would be first. Well, it did not take long! Alliance angler is first Nebraska Trout Slam recipient ALLIANCE, Neb. — The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission has its first official Trout Slam angler. Justin Powell of Alliance was the first to meet the requirements of the new program, …

Trout Slam

I am always touting the diversity of fishing opportunities Nebraska has to offer; I believe that is one of the unique things we do offer anglers in the state.  That certainly includes cold-water fisheries that are capable of supporting trout year-round.  No, I am not talking about the urban and parks waters where we stock put & take trout in the fall, winter and early spring, I am talking about some of the prettiest places in the state where we …

What Lurks Beneath, Stream Sampling

I like to give updates whenever I can on some of the fish sampling our Game & Parks fisheries biologists are doing around the state.  Admittedly, in most of those updates I have showed pictures of fish sampled from our state’s lakes, reservoirs, pits and ponds.  We also do work on a variety of rivers and streams in Nebraska including cold-water streams that support year-around, reproducing populations of trout.  I mentioned some of that cold-water stream sampling earlier this year, …

Name Dropping

EDITOR’S NOTE:  This blog ain’t about Nebraska.  It IS about a lifestyle that includes family and fishing.  Even though this particular post is not Nebraska-centric, I suspect many of you will be interested in the adventures anyhow.  In fact, most of us have a list of waters in-state and out-of-state that we love to fish, let me drop the names of a few of them here. . . . My immediate family and I spent a week in Montana recently. …

Cool It!

IMG_1102

Looks like we are going to catch a break from our mid-summer’s heat throughout most of Nebraska over the next week or two.  That is nice although I expect July and August to be H-O-T, hot.  Over the past few weeks, I have been out and about during what has been some of our hottest weather this year.  I know there have been more than a couple of afternoons when the only possible activity was sitting in air-conditioning or immersing …

Fisheries Biologists on Horses???!!!

SoldierCreekBrookieFall2016

This blog post is going to be a real easy one for me, I am simply going to tell you to follow a link and read another blog post done by one of my Game & Parks Commission co-workers.  Recently, Justin Haag was able to tag along with a couple of our fisheries biologists in western Nebraska while they horse-backed into one of our most remote, and unique, fisheries to do some sampling.  Justin blogged about it here, Fisheries Work …

Great Fall

IMG_0458

As I sit here “blogging”, I am pretty sure my open-water fishing for this season is done.  Sure you could still find a few areas of open-water and dry off some fish, you can all winter long if you wish, but most Nebraska anglers are going to be hitting the ice soon, very soon. So, that means it is time for me to give a report on my and my son’s fall fishing.  In recent weeks I have showed you …

Fall Tour

img_0425a

I had some meetings to attend “out west” a couple of weeks ago.  That gave me a chance to re-visit some places I do not get to nearly enough.  Fall is one of the prettiest times to be there.  I had to stop and catch my breath when I finally saw the end of the road. The view was just as pretty looking back from whence I had just come. Here is one of the cathedrals I visited. And looking …
