Guillermo Goes Fishing!

IMG_1035

I gotta admit I am not a big fan of late night talk shows anymore.  I don’t know, maybe it is just because I am getting old, but they just don’t seem as funny, as entertaining anymore.  I long for the days of “monkey-cam” and velcro suits brought to you from the home office in Wahoo, Nebraska! However, fishing did make it on one of the late night shows this week.  Here is what it looked like: https://youtu.be/cV5JWW1jVZM I don’t …

Cool Cliff Swallows (Of The Big Papio And Beyond)

You can’t miss them. You really can’t. Around bridges over rivers or creeks this time of year, they immediately snatch your attention. Maybe it’s their sheer numbers (hundreds, if not thousands of them) and their extreme aerial acrobatics that catch your eye. Or, maybe it’s them coming in and out of their clusters of gourd-like mud nests clinging to the walls beneath bridge overhangs that capture your awareness. Or, perhaps it is the throng of bird activity along the muddy bank of a stream or mud hole …

Aquatic Habitat Program Celebrates 20 Years

Fisheries biologists Jared Lorensen and Caleb Huber conduct an electrofishing survey on West Brady Wildlife Management Area, one of seven interstate lakes recently improved for angler access.

To maintain, restore or enhance the capacity of a waterbody to produce and sustain fish. In the mid-1990s, Nebraska’s reservoirs constructed during the middle part of the 20th century were showing their age: Basins had filled with silt, shorelines had eroded, water quality had degraded, and less-than-desirable fish communities made for poor angling. Anglers wanted change. More than 650 anglers attended 19 meetings across the state beginning in 1993 to discuss problems and possible solutions related to aging reservoirs and …

Spring Fish Die-Offs

005

There is no question the most common phone call/e-mail/FaceBook message I have received in the past few weeks has been about some dead fish in this or that location across Nebraska.  This has been widespread enough that we put out a news release last week: Spring fish die-offs not unusual in Nebraska LINCOLN, Neb. – Spring fish die-offs in Nebraska are not unusual. Reports of these fish kills – which have been due to natural causes – have come from …

Tiger Cats

DSCN2535a

I did not spend a lot of time on the water over the Memorial Day weekend, but that was alright.  We spent a lot of time with family.  Never fear, I did spend some time on the water; would have spent more if it were not for a nasty storm that blew up one evening.  From that little bit of time on the water, I can tell you one thing:  Right now the channel catfish are en fuego. Fishing reports …

How To Not Let the Big One Get Away

I do not do this often, but from time to time I will copy “stuff” I have found on other blogs or somewhere else on the interwebs and post it here on my blog.  This week my buddy Greg Wagner wrote a great blog on not just hooking big fish but then landing them, and what to do with them after they are landed.  Yes, I talked to Greg while he was writing his blog and he quotes me in …

DSCN2938a

I promised last week that there would be more spring turkey hunting stories coming.  Here ya go. . . . My son and I did some hunting in southeast Nebraska and then a little over a week later slipped out west.  We had a family celebration to attend to, my daughter graduated from NCTA (Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture) in Curtis so naturally we were out for that.  Emily got a diploma and a nifty-looking belt buckle; I got a …
