Fort Atkinson State Historical Park’s final Living History event of the 2014 season will be held October 4 and 5. Visitors will witness this 1820’s Military Post come alive as volunteer interpreters portray the daily activities of soldiers and civilians as they prepare for the upcoming winter. With high expectations Commissioner Burke and I spent a few hours on the water at Johnson Lake to kick off the holiday weekend. Trolling is the method we prefer, however after two-plus hours we drew the big goose egg! Saturday morning I left Johnson early to meet the Forney brothers and son Shane at Lake McConaughy. Tomorrow morning I’ll be bound for our brand new Nebraska Game and Parks Commission exhibit at the NE State Fair in Grand Island’s Fonner Park. I can’t wait to work it all day! September is Nebraska Archaeology Month and staff of the Nebraska State Historical Society will lead tours of the archaeological sites at Fort Atkinson State Historical Park (SHP), to be held concurrently with the Fort’s Living History weekend on September 6 and 7.
