Midland Musings with Jenny Nguyen – Trout Stocking in Verdigre Creek

If there’s any fish that has a special place in my heart, it would be trout. While backpacking in the Sierras during high school, my weary companions and I came to a small pool that peacefully shimmered in the sun. A creek– a tributary from the great Kern River– ran through it, gently rippling the cold, crystalline surface that held a handful of unknowing golden trout underneath. So we threw down our packs, and my friend handed me his fishing …

In the Field with Jeff Kurrus – Photos from the South

As promised, take a look at a few gopro images from my trip back south to TN. The first is on a hawk perch with a breasted snow goose as bait. Following this set of images, dad and I staked another breasted snow to the ground and captured several images the following night including the following: It’s been a perfect scenario to do more research with these cameras. What I have found out so far is both encouraging and disturbing. …

In the Field with Jeff Kurrus – Greetings from TN

While visiting family in Tennessee, my dad and I have been setting out gopro cameras every night to capture raccoons feeding. The project has been a blast and we have some pretty cool images to share. But, as many of my coworkers have told me, my parents’ house is in the middle of nowhere and my Internet connection and ability to show you photos is virtually nonexistent. But when I eventually go “to town,” I will share our photos from …

Midland Musings with Jenny Nguyen – Super Dogs, Yummy Birds and Photography

Last week, I experienced pheasant hunting for the first time. Well, it wasn’t really “hunting.” It was a training session for a couple dogs at Pheasants Bonanza. Jeff Kurrus thought it would be a great opportunity to get GoPro footage of dogs on the prowl. Even though it wasn’t a real hunt, it was a first for me. Prior to this experience, I have only seen a total of two pheasants in my entire life! And never have I witnessed …

Panhandle Passages with Justin Haag – Firsts Aplenty

When I signed on with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission a little over a month ago, I did so with aspirations to experience a lot of firsts. If last week can serve as any indicator, the job will not disappoint. Here’s a quick rundown: A Capturing Scene It was my first time seeing a helicopter wildlife capture crew in action live. During one sunrise and the next, I was sprinting toward my posts on a cliff high above the …

Great Plains Connections with Julie Geiser – Get Outside

So tell me, when was the last time you got out of the house and went outside to play in the great outdoors? You know it really doesn’t matter how extravagant your outing is, the important part is that you got outside. Now getting outside can have different meanings for each of us; quiet time for you, getting the kids outside for an adventure, being with family and friends, getting some exercise or just to go out for the fun …

In The Field with Jeff Kurrus – Winter Storm Q Time Lapse

I promised you a time lapse of the storm, so here it is. There are still some kinks to work out (including figuring out an easy way to remove the text at the bottom of the video and the transitions between night and early morning light), but I’ll take you along for the ride. The camera was set out for about 18 hours with an image being made ever 30 seconds. Enjoy.

Midland Musings with Jenny Nguyen – “The Search For Coolness”

The title was Jeff Kurrus’s idea. Lame, huh? Anyway, here’s what Jeff and I did this past Monday: NOT ruining a $400 GoPro camera. Although, I almost wished we had because it would’ve been so doggone funny. My only job was to push the button and to stand back. It wasn’t my idea. What do I care? I can see Jeff trying to explain that one. Fortunately for him, the camera survived. We did get this really cool photo below. It …
