Nebraska Youth Smallbore Silhouette Invitational Set for Sept. 26

LINCOLN – The annual Nebraska Youth Smallbore Silhouette Invitational will be held Sept. 26 at the Pressey Wildlife Management Area. This is free competition, previously known as the Nebraska High School Smallbore Silhouette Championships, is open to all youth age 11 or older who have successfully completed Hunter Education and who have not yet graduated from high school. Game and Parks Communication Staff Recognized by Association for Conservation Information

LINCOLN — The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission’s communications staff won eight awards at the Association of Conservation Information annual conference held July 13-17 in Flagstaff, Ariz. Game and Parks staff were recognized for photography, magazine articles and press releases, marketing efforts, graphic design and special publications. Target Shooting Banned on Portions of Hamburg Bend WMA

LINCOLN – Target shooting is prohibited, effective immediately, on portions of Hamburg Bend Wildlife Management Area (WMA) south of Nebraska City in Otoe County because of safety issues. Target shooting is prohibited within 100 yards of the north parking lot located at the east end of County Road L and also within 100 yards of the termination of County Road N at the flood control levee. Requests for Special Grouse Permits Accepted

LINCOLN – East Zone special grouse permit applications are being accepted by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission until all permits are taken. This permit is required, along with a Nebraska hunting (small game) permit, to hunt grouse east of U.S. Highway 81. The hunting season is Sept. 1 – Jan. 31, 2016. There are 400 of the special permits available for hunting east of U.S. 81. The permits are limited to one per hunter and available on a first-come, …

New Hunter Education Options Available

LINCOLN – New options are available for people who want to become certified in hunter education in Nebraska. These options are designed to make the course accessible to more people. There now are two certification options for both firearm and bowhunter education for each of two age groups. People age 11 to 15 may complete hunter education (firearm or bow) either by taking a traditional 10-hour classroom course or by taking an online course followed by participation in a two-hour …

Northern Bobwhite Appears to Continue Recovery

LINCOLN – Results of a survey indicate that northern bobwhite populations appear to be continuing their rebound in Nebraska following the severe winters of 2009-2010 and the severe drought of 2012-2013. The observed increases of abundance from this summer’s northern bobwhite (quail) whistle count also imply that the population was not further set back by the heavy rains in May and June this year. Valentine Game and Parks Maintenance Office to Close

LINCOLN – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission has opted not to renew its lease for the Valentine Maintenance office. The office, located at 420 E. 1st St. in Valentine, will close immediately. Game and Parks plans to move the office to Merritt Reservoir State Recreation Area southwest of Valentine. Parks Division offices will be temporarily moved to the Valentine Fish Hatchery. North Platte’s Pavelka, Rowland Win State High School Fishing Title

LINCOLN – Grant Pavelka and Tyler Rowland of the North Platte Bass Bosses caught a five-fish limit weighing 9.86 pounds to capture the Nebraska High School Fishing Championship on July 25 at Lewis and Clark Lake near Crofton. The winning team’s largest bass weighed 2.35 pounds. Ben Pavelka was the team’s coach and boat operator. $5 Fridays Coming to Nebraska Game and Parks Outdoor Education Center

LINCOLN – The Nebraska Game and Parks Outdoor Education Center in Lincoln will offer special shooting rates at the indoor shooting park each Friday in July and August. The center will offer shooting for $5 per half hour per lane all day on Fridays. The special is designed for those who have their own equipment.
