Statewide Events in May to Help Celebrate Nebraska Bird Month

LINCOLN – Bird lovers across the state will be congregating in May in dozens of get-togethers to celebrate International Migratory Bird Month, better known as Nebraska Bird Month. “The goal of Nebraska Bird Month is to help Nebraskans learn about and protect our feathered friends,” said Nebraska Game and Parks wildlife educator Lindsay Rogers. “Public awareness and concern are crucial components of migratory bird conservation.” Several Nebraska state parks and recreational areas will be hosting events: • Ponca State Park, …

Living History Weekend at Fort Atkinson SHP April 30 and May 1

LINCOLN – Life at an 1820s military post will be depicted at Living History Weekend at Fort Atkinson State Historical Park on April 30 and May 1. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., visitors are encouraged to interact with volunteers demonstrating period trades such as blacksmithing, carpentry, tinsmithing and coopering, as well as crafts such as quilting, spinning and weaving. LINCOLN – Ordinary people become “citizen scientists” during a BioBlitz walk, four of which are being held for the first time in Nebraska this May. During a BioBlitz event, participants find and identify as many species of plants, animals, fungi, and other organisms as possible in a specific area. Youth Fishing Instructor Workshop in Gering Cancelled

LINCOLN – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission’s youth fishing instructor certification workshop scheduled for April 24 in Gering has been cancelled. These workshops are conducted across the state each year. Youth fishing instructors receive training and tools to conduct fishing clinics. These volunteers have access to Nebraska Game and Parks’ loaner fishing equipment and educational materials for events, as well as receive program incentives. LINCOLN – A free kids’ fishing clinic will be held April 30 at the Valentine State Fish Hatchery. It will be hosted by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission and Valentine Lions Club. LINCOLN – Visitors to Conestoga Reservoir State Recreation in Lancaster County may find temporary area closures as an Aquatic Habitat project begins there this week. The long-awaited project for this popular destination between Emerald and Denton will continue through the summer of 2017.
