Financial Incentives Available for Improving Pheasant Habitat, Access

Agriculture producers in the northern Panhandle are among many Nebraska landowners who may be eligible to earn extra income by helping the region’s pheasant population and other wildlife. The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is offering special incentives to landowners within what has been labeled a Pheasant Opportunity Area in Box Butte, Dawes and Sheridan counties. Woman Hospitalized Following Bridgeport SRA Boating Accident

LINCOLN – A 21-year-old Virginia woman is hospitalized in stable condition following a June 22 boating accident at Bridgeport State Recreation Area (SRA). Hailie Knight, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, was one of two occupants on a tube being pulled on the SRA’s center lake by a personal watercraft. The tube struck a tree, resulting in the victim’s severe injuries. The second occupant was treated for minor cuts and bruises. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in this incident. …

State High School Fishing Tournament Coming to Elwood Reservoir July 23

LINCOLN – The Sixth Annual Nebraska State High School Fishing Tournament is scheduled for July 23 at Elwood Reservoir Wildlife Management Area (WMA). The tournament, a cooperative program between the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission and The Bass Federation – Student Angler Foundation, is open to two-person teams of anglers in grades 9 through 12. Health Advisory in Effect at Harlan County Reservoir, Lifted at Pawnee Lake

LINCOLN – A health advisory is in effect at Harlan County Reservoir in Harlan County after high levels of toxic blue-green algae were detected earlier this week. Meanwhile, a health advisory has been lifted at Pawnee Lake in Lancaster County. The elevated algae levels at Harlan County Reservoir were detected during testing by the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality (NDEQ). During this same round of testing, blue-green algae levels at Pawnee Lake were shown to have dropped to normal levels. …

Hamburg Bend WMA Closed to Target Shooting

LINCOLN – Hamburg Bend Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in Otoe County has been closed to target shooting effective immediately. The closure comes at the request of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which owns the property, as well the Sanitary Improvement District #1, which manages the Missouri River levee on this site. Target shooting is prohibited because of safety concerns for neighboring landowners and area users, as well as erosion of the river levee. Target shooting is permitted on WMAs …
