Measuring Time

For me and my spaniels there are two time designations in the fall – BN & PT.  We are currently in the BN or Before November time period.  The BN period is often characterized by the mostly carefree time one spends outdoors pursuing critters during the early hunting seasons.  These hunts are often rather relaxing affairs with the idea that many are a prelude to the bigger or better hunts yet to come.  Common examples of hunting at this time can …

A Sucker for Rings

Like iron filings to a magnet – or teenie-boppers to a Justin Bieber concert – I find myself almost inexplicably drawn to the ring-necked pheasant.  As October nears its end my mind centers more and more on the bird that wears autumn in its feathers. Make no mistake I love the chaos of a bobwhite covey, sing praises for the noble prairie chicken and sometimes swear at the devious sharp-tailed grouse.  However, when the final Saturday of the month arrives I have tunnel vision for the …

Blind Hope

Hunters and anglers must be the most optimistic folks on the planet….We spend countless hours working on equipment, scouting, planning, hoping that our efforts will result in the critter of a lifetime. Yep, we are eternal optimists. But with each heartfelt effort, we know the fall will bring rewards in terms of game, fun, memories and all the cool stuff we will see. Duck hunters are no exception… My father-in-law and brother-in-law and I recently put our duck blind back …

Early Season Archery Is All About Food and Sleep

This latest bout of cooler weather came just in the nick of time for us archers. Cooler mornings mean more comfort for the hunter and better movement by deer. A lot of hunters like to wait until later in the season to hunt and you are missing out if that is the case. Early season can be a great time to connect on a deer. Right now, deer are somewhat predictable. They are set in normal feeding/bedding patterns and can …

Teal are Just the Tip

It starts on the faded-blue wing patch of the teal, capitalized by the Canada goose, punctuated by the elegance of the pintail and capped by the mayhem that is the green-headed mallard.  It is the fall waterfowl migration, and it is spectacular. Few can resist the instinctual urge to glance skyward when the sounds off of a passing flock reach their ears – I know I cannot.   The annual southward movement of waterfowl has been an attraction to me for …

The Changing Face of American Target Shooters

I just had to share the recent report from the National Shooting Sports Foundation.  They do a lot of research on the hunting and shooting sports market that you and I live for and some interesting trends continue in target shooting!   Of the more impressive findings is that one in five target shooters began shooting in the last five years.  This means that all the recent education programs, marketing, industry efforts, and the recent surge in gun sales has  resulted …

Already getting folks asking for another one and we may try to hold one in the Omaha area before snowfall. Many asked about all the construction going on at Boosalis Park in Lincoln (location of the …
