Pretty Trout Stream on WOWT 6 Outdoors

For my Weekly Outdoor Report on Omaha’s WOWT 6 News, we’re heading to one of my favorite places in Nebraska to do some trout stream fishing – about three hours northwest of the metro area. Take a look at the photo below. Know where we’re going? See how clear the water is in this pristine, spring-fed creek. My wife Polly loves to fish it and catch rainbow trout which are stocked weekly! Prized, wild brown trout thrive in this creek as well. I enjoy catching …

Nothing to Carp About

The nice spring weather here in Nebraska this weekend was certainly nothing to carp about and neither was the fishing action today along one of Nebraska’s water trails — the Elkhorn River as well as in a nearby backwater pond! My buddy Andre and I took his eight year-old daughter Isabelle fishing on her Uncle Mark’s land. She had a blast catching carp using whole nightcrawlers! Even I landed one. It was just great to be outside and enjoy fishing with Isabelle and Andre. Remember, whenever there’s an opportunity to take a …

Rain Dance, Smell of the Morel

I did a rain dance outside in the front yard of my home in the Metcalfe Park Neighborhood of Omaha, NE earlier this morning. Like the outfit (my jammies)? My poor neighbor, Brian, had to witness the rain dance while backing out of his driveway to go to work, sorry about that, Brian. Hey, precipitation is falling, woo-hoo! As a nature lover, how could one not think about the benefit of this moisture to the soil and, of course, for morel mushrooms in the woods! …

Dogs of the Conservation Order Complete the Hunt

“The journey of life is sweeter when traveled with a dog …” Unknown. I have always commented that dogs complete the hunting experience, especially when it comes to waterfowl.  This is so true in the current Light Goose Conservation Order hunting period on Snow and Ross’s Geese here in Nebraska! I have been fortunate to witness some outstanding dog work with some affectionate canines! I thought I’d share some of the images I captured by digital camera of these four-legged hunting companions along with their owners. Above, this is Copper, …

My Marsh Madness: Selection Sunday Light Goose Hunt

Yesterday was an exciting day for college basketball in this state with both Creighton and Nebraska qualifying for the March Madness of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament in the same region (congrats to both the Jays and the Huskers, and they may even end up playing each other!). But for me, ‘selection Sunday’  as it is so named, meant ‘marsh madness.’ As you may be able to tell, I spent the entire day hunting light geese (Snow and Ross’s geese) during the Conservation Order hunting period on a friend …

Friday Funnies in The Great Outdoors

It’s FRIDAAAAAY! So, I thought I’d share some Friday funnies in the area of Nebraska’s great outdoors with you. First, courtesy of Dylan McCaugherty, Interactive Digital Media Manager for us at the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission (a.k.a. Digital Dylan), comes this one, entitled: The Antelope. Corny, but funny. Next, I have a couple crazy ideas for billboards, postcards, etc. promoting a new Nebraska tourism marketing campaign aimed at attracting outdoor enthusiasts to our state. What do you think? And finally, life would be better with my fishin’ if I …
