Spring Break: Sporting Clays, Pheasants, Chukars, Fun and Memories

To get young people ‘outdoors’ these days, you have to be flexible and take advantage of any windows of opportunity that are there. Such was the case this past week when my 17 year-old Son Noah, a junior at Omaha’s Creighton Prep High School, had spring break. Noah had been bugging me to take him hunting in some fashion over his break from school. As adult sportsmen and women we all need to make time in our own busy schedules to take kids to the …

Light Geese: They’re Not Cat Food!

Gosh darn, I hate it when any wildlife specie, especially a game specie, is demeaned in any way. All wildlife matters. On my personal Facebook page, I had one of my friends (I ‘friend’ everyone, by the way) call snow and Ross’s geese that I had harvested during the Light Goose Conservation Order hunting period “cat food” on a pic I shared. I know it was meant somewhat in gest, but also with some personal candor. I deleted the comment. Here’s the pic. Look friends, migratory snow and Ross’s Geese …

Six Cures for (Late-Winter) Cabin Fever

Brrrr! It’s been so cold outside! Temperatures have been running far below normal as evidenced this past week by the large thermometer I have in our backyard. Off and on, I continue to suffer from cabin fever! How about you? From my vantage point in eastern Nebraska, we’re kind of in between seasons in the state’s outdoor scene, too. As a sportsman, I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of snow and Ross’s geese for light goose conservation order hunting here in eastern Nebraska and open water fishing for various …
