Hunters Helping the Hungry program continues to grow

LINCOLN, Neb. – Nebraska’s Hunters Helping the Hungry (HHH) program continues to grow, as 2016 saw a 23 percent increase in the number of deer donated. Established in 2012 by the Nebraska Legislature, HHH is a program that provides ground venison to Nebraskans in need. It allows hunters to donate whole field-dressed deer at participating meat processors, food pantries and other charitable organizations. In 2016, a record 528 hunters participated, and Nebraskans received more than 28,000 pounds of venison. The …

Commission adopts big game recommendations

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission adopted staff recommendations for 2017 big game hunting seasons at its meeting April 21 in Norfolk. Among the big game changes to Commission orders: — Twenty-six either-sex and 54 doe/fawn antelope permits were added in units in the southern Panhandle. — Three cow elk permits were added in the Ash Creek Unit. — Antlerless-only whitetail permits were reduced in several eastern units. — Permits in southwest units were changed to increase …

Survey: 2016 fall turkey hunters overwhelmingly satisfied with Nebraska hunt

LINCOLN, Neb. – Hunters who took part in Nebraska’s 2016 fall turkey season were overwhelmingly satisfied with the quality of their hunting experience, according to a Nebraska Game and Parks Commission survey. According to the survey, which was open only to 2016 fall turkey hunters, 63 percent were satisfied with their hunting experience. The results are based on 1,114 responses. Sight-in range being built at Killdeer WMA in Lancaster County

LINCOLN, Neb. – A firearm sight-in range is being built at Killdeer Wildlife Management Area in Lancaster County. It is designed as a safe, user-friendly facility to allow hunters an opportunity to sight-in a rifle or handgun. The range will be 100 yards in length. Gov. Ricketts proclaims Nebraska top turkey hunting destination

LINCOLN, Neb. – Gov. Pete Ricketts signed a proclamation on April 12 declaring that Nebraska is the Best Turkey Hunting Destination in the United States. The governor signed the proclamation in a ceremony at the Nebraska Capitol and presented it to Nebraska Game and Parks Commission Deputy Director Tim McCoy and District 1 Commissioner Dan Kreitman of Wahoo (southeastern Nebraska). There are three things that I take as telltale signs that spring is here: the chirping of the Boreal Chorus Frog, budding trees, and the sound of gobbling turkeys. Bighorn sheep lottery applications begin April 17

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will accept applications for a 2017 bighorn sheep lottery permit beginning April 17. Only Nebraska residents are eligible. The application period ends Aug. 4, and the permit will be drawn Aug. 17. A $29 nonrefundable application fee must accompany each application. Apply at a Nebraska Game and Parks office or at OutdoorNebraska.org. The 2017 bighorn sheep season is Nov. 28-Dec. 22.
