We’ve All Been There!

I found this video on the interwebs recently.  I kind of like it! OK, I suppose that is a nice video to help you relax and get ready for you next fishing trip, maybe even this weekend, but I liked it so much because I relate to it!  “Hey, I resemble that remark”! Some of you watched a little of it, maybe half, and mumbled something disparaging about fly anglers.  BALONEY.  You have done the same thing, bass on topwater …

Go Bowfishing: Aim Low, Think Big, Shoot Often, Have Fun!

Zac Hickle is an avid fisherman. He could take a rod and reel, tackle box and bait, and sit by the river’s edge to try to catch catfish and a variety of other fish. But, he doesn’t do that. Instead, at home he gets his young 6-year old son, Gavin, ready, then hitches up his customized Jon boat loaded with archery fishing gear, life jackets and large tubs, and sets off for the backwaters of mighty Missouri River. You see, Zac Hickle of Elkhorn, NE is a hardcore …

Lake Maloney white bass die-off not caused by disease

NGPC Latest News logo

LINCOLN, Neb. – The die-off of white bass May 26 at Lake Maloney was not the result of any infectious diseases, according to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. The cause can be attributed to the fish being concentrated in a localized area of the lake, stress due to spawning and a brief period of poor water quality. Samples were collected and submitted to a fish health laboratory following the die-off. Results from tissue samples indicated several possible causes, but …

NGPC Latest News logo

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission has certified three state fishing records in recent months. — Nicholas Batt of Elkhorn set a hook-and-line record April 12 when he caught a 3-pound, 1-ounce tiger trout on a night crawler while fishing the North Platte River below Lake Ogallala. “Tiger trout are a brown trout/brook trout hybrid. The growth potential for tiger trout is still much more than 3 pounds,” said Daryl Bauer, Game and Parks’ fisheries outreach program …

Summertime Fish Handling

WiperReleaseCropb

Water temperatures are at or near their peak in many Nebraska waters right now, and they are going to stay that way for the next several weeks.  That means your fish handling skills have to be at their best right now–a released fish does no one any good if it perishes.  I have blogged extensively about fish handling and catch & release in the past; the July 2018 NEBRASKAland uses some of that material and is a nice reminder! My …
