What is a Fish Worth?

dscn5553

I am going to plagiarize myself in this blog post and repeat something I wrote a few years back, back before this whole blogging thing.  I will update some figures and so forth, and add some comments, but this originally ran in the January/February 1998 issue of NEBRASKAland magazine. Determining the value of a fish is difficult.  Some anglers see fish and fishing as an integral part of life and might consider fish priceless.  Others might set its value based …

A Good Hunting Knife

There is no other piece of equipment needed to perform as many tasks, in as many ways, under as many conditions, as the knife, especially in hunting. It can do everything from field dress and skin an animal in the field to cut cord and help spark a fire in a survival situation. A good knife is a quintessential tool for any outdoor enthusiast, but particularly for the hunter. For those of us who hunt, that knife is an icon, …

Cornhusker Fly Fishers

Want to mention another excellent Nebraska fishing organization, the Cornhusker Fly Fishers.  They meet monthly at our Ak-Sar-Ben Aquarium south of Gretna.  If you check their calendar, you will see that this is a very active bunch of anglers doing fly-tying, fishing events, casting classes, meetings and a whole lot more.  Many of them are volunteer fishing instructors and also help with kid’s fishing events, family fishing nights, sport shows, and Expos.  If you are an angler, especially a fly angler, …

Cold Water Stream Plan

img_5384

A few weeks ago a story ran in the Omaha World-Herald about a new comprehensive plan addressing stream habitat needs across the state.  Please take some time and read the Marjie Ducey story, Plan aims to preserve streams across Nebraska. I wanted to mention this in a blog post to fill in a few blanks.  First of all, if you are interested in details, if you want to see the actual 120-page plan, here it is, Cool Water Stream Management …

Nebraska Wildlife Crimestoppers

One of the most common questions I answer is who to call when some fish or game violation is observed while on the water or in the field.  I tell folks that those fish & wildlife belong to them, belong to me, and the poachers are stealing from all of us!  When we see something we should be upset about it.  However, it is not for us to do something directly, and the best thing we can do is observe as …

Got home Sunday afternoon from our annual Becoming an Outdoors-Woman weekend.  What a great weekend it was!!!!!  The weather was the best ever this year, but it was so much more than that. . . . For the first time this year, the workshop was held at Ponca State Park.  If you have never been to Ponca, you should be required to go.  It is a beautiful park in a beautiful location.  Here was sunrise over the foggy Missouri River …

There is no doubt the most common question I have been asked the past couple of weeks would be “When are the Trout going to be stocked?”  When are the put & take, catchable-size Rainbow Trout going to be stocked in urban and parks waters across the state this fall?  Well, now I know: Rainbow trout stockings scheduled this fall LINCOLN – Catchable-size rainbow trout are being stocked in city ponds and lakes across the state by the Nebraska Game and …

Nebraska’s Other Corn: A-CORNS!

I was down in Nebraska City the other weekend for the Apple Jack Festival. I never pass up a chance to climb a tree and there is nothing like picking your own apples from trees rooted in Nebraska soil.  This got me thinking about all the other Nebraska fall treasures I might be under-utilizing.  As I was pondering my many life questions, I felt myself suddenly slipping backwards. I had stepped on a large, round acorn which caught me off …

Fall is Big Fish Time!

dscn2752c

The fall bite is on, the best open-water fishing of the year is upon us!  It is also the best time of year to use big baits for big fish.  Don’t believe me? OK, now I must post the disclaimers because I learned a long time ago that some people take things they see on the internet way too seriously, and some people do not have much of a sense of humor. . . . That is a picture one …

It’s About Time!

turkeywatch

I have a confession to make:  I stole an issue of Reader’s Digest from my mother-in-law.  Even worse, I stole it while we were there for Christmas last year.  What in the world would cause me to commit such an offense? Well, I read a story there that really hit home, really made sense.  In Reader’s Digest it was titled “A Case Against The Clock”.  However, if you know anything about Reader’s Digest, you know it is a compilation of …
