Missing That Duck Blind Cooking!

My favorite meals have come from the heat of a campfire or the excitement of a duck blind.  Make no mistake, I like most foods, but those that came from the crackle of an open fire or the camaraderie of the duck blind….that taste lingers! The duck blind is a time for special dishes from a more hidden menu.   Dishes you don’t find every day have a solid place in such venues.  I am not going to fill you …

Adventure Report, Father’s Day

Let me give an update on some of my latest fishing in our great state.  On Father’s Day my kids and I were invited by a buddy to fish on a private pit.  That sounded like a really good idea and we jumped at the opportunity. As soon as we got there and tackled up, we spotted a bunch of bluegills and small largemouth bass cruising the shorelines.  That is a very common sight on Nebraska pits and ponds this …

Canoeing the Scenic Niobrara River on WOWT 6 Outdoors

Grab a life jacket and hop aboard, we’re gonna canoe the spring-fed waters of the gorgeous Niobrara River east of  Valentine, NE this week on my WOWT 6 News Weekly Outdoor Report. I’ll talk about and show you why a summer float trip on this Nebraska water trail through an outfitter should be on everyone’s bucket list! I’ll also address how to avoid a lot of other water traffic on this scenic river. The ecologically unique Niobrara River valley is also home to …

Carp Tour 2014

Last Saturday was our annual Carp-O-Rama carnival at Pawnee Reservoir.  A lot of folks came out and I hope they had a great time with us and maybe learned a thing or three along the way.  The fishing was slow.  We had a significant rainfall event overnight before the event and I wonder if the carp fishing might have been better at the upper end of the reservoir where there was some water flowing in? Regardless, if you were not …

Out of Your Comfort Zone

I sincerely enjoy traveling, especially throughout our beautiful state of Nebraska. I can say that I have been to all 93 Nebraska counties for work purposes or outdoor pursuits. Another one of my ‘claims to fame’ is that I have driven every highway in the Cornhusker State. I have also floated all of Nebraska’s water trails. However, as an avid outdoor enthusiast, I think what’s important to do is to get out of your comfort zone and even consider venturing to another state. Enter into a different environment, a different …

Call Me “Angler”

The politically correct world in which we are supposed to live is crazy. Yes, that insanity even applies to fish and fishing.  If you have read my blog for any time you know that I mostly blog about fish and the folks who pursue them.  In doing that I try to remember that political correctness dictates the use of gender-neutral terms.  Even though the term “man” or “men” would be gender-neutral when referring to a group, that use has been deemed to …

Big Mac on Great Outdoor Radio Show

Nebraska’s massive, scenic outdoor playground, the Lake McConaughy/Lake Ogallala complex in Keith County, will be highlighted on my Saturday morning Great Outdoor Radio Show. My special guest will be Scott Eveland who is a boating safety officer for us at the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. He works the Lake McConaughy/Lake Ogallala area along with the western portion of the state. Scott thoroughly knows the waters and landscape of Keith County. Scott will also talk about the impressive trout fishery at Lake Ogallala. Don’t miss an opportunity to chat …

Big Time!

I got a phone call a couple of weeks ago, a request.  It was one of the folks from Nebraska public TV’s Backyard Farmer.  Somehow they had my name and wanted to know if I would film a segment on native fish people could put in their backyard ponds.  I told them I was in no way an expert on backyard ponds, but I was honored they asked, and  if they wanted to talk about some Nebraska fish in those ponds …

Carp-O-Rama 2014

Next Saturday is the day!  Time for our annual Carp-O-Rama carnival at Pawnee Reservoir! We will have another major “Carp-O-Rama” event next month at Lake Maloney south of North Platte; stay tuned, I will post some reminders about that later. I always say that basically we just show up and have fun at these family fishing events and we hope folks come out and have fun with us!  Our Carp-O-Rama event at Pawnee Reservoir is one of the biggest examples …

Hunting Withdrawal Syndrome

“A man may not care for golf and still be human, but the man who does not like to see, hunt, photograph, or otherwise outwit birds or animals is hardly normal. He is supercivilized and I for one do not know how to deal with him.”  – Aldo Leopold. It’s mid-June and I’m grumpy. There’s yard work to be done, household projects to be completed, weekly errands to be ran, and a variety 0f other tasks that need to be accomplished. Ugh, the rat race gets …
