Reel ’em in Roadtrip – Harlan Delivers the Hits

Submitted by Commissioner Lynn Berggren – Fall fishing has started to slow this past month. Reports from area lakes indicates anglers on the southwest reservoirs seem to be a struggling. White bass on Johnson Lake are still hitting when you can find the shad on top. On Elwood the wipers have really become tight-lipped. With no incoming water this year, fishing the bubble will be out. Harlan reports last week’s activity was slow but, with persistence, walleye could be found.  …

Reeling in the Elusive Northern Pike – Lake Wanahoo

Commissioners’ Corner – Dr. Mark Pinkerton What a great day! I recently spent the day fishing and learning about one of the state’s newest fishing spots.   As a newly appointed Commissioner back around 2002 I toured the Lake Wanahoo construction site before any dirt had been moved. All I can say is WOW, what a change. I am impressed. The lake is amazing. From breakwater structures to trees that provide great fish habitat the lake is very well thought out …

Whaling

It has come to my attention that various sites in the cybersphere are reporting that Nebraska has a law on the books prohibiting the capture of whales by fishing, Stupid Laws, Nebraska. Oh really? Try as I might, I cannot cite you “chapter and verse” where that law is in writing.  You know, “Chapter 66.4, page 32, column A, section C14, paragraph 12, line 7 of the Nebraska Legislative Code, 1867, states that no members of the Order Cetacea may …

The number of reported boating accidents also decreased, from 44 in 2012 to 31 in 2013. “That’s what diligent law enforcement, coupled by expanded, excellent boating safety education, can do,” said Herb Angell, Nebraska’s boating law administrator. The state has …
