New Pine Ridge Mule Deer Survey Improves Population Data

LINCOLN – Nebraska Game and Parks Commission employees used a bird’s-eye view of the rugged high country of the Pine Ridge last month to obtain more accurate deer population data for northwestern Nebraska. During five days in early February, Game and Parks staff members boarded a contracted helicopter and surveyed eight areas of the Pine Ridge Management Unit, which encompasses 429 square miles. Two ATV Jamborees Scheduled for Lake McConaughy SRA

Lake McConaughy State Recreation Area (SRA) will host ATV riding events April 4-6 and Oct. 3-5. Each weekend will include open riding, Poker Run, dealer displays, food vendors and live entertainment. Organizers are planning to add Sand Drag Races and Kids’ Barrel Races to the lineup. The event is open to all ATV/UTV riders age 18 and older. Fishing Fundamentals Offered at SCC

LINCOLN – Southeast Community College (SCC), in partnership with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, is offering a new continuing education class called Fishing Fundamentals. The class is a four-week, family-oriented course that will teach families about equipment, common fish species and how to catch them, regulations, and where to fish. Commissioners to Discuss Big Game Regulations During March Meeting

LINCOLN – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commissioners will consider big game recommendations when they meet March 21 in Norfolk. The meeting will be at 8 a.m. at Divots Conference Center, 4200 W. Norfolk Ave. One recommendation would remove 18,420 antlerless deer bonus tags from 12 units. Another would remove 950 buck/either-sex deer permits in the Elkhorn, Platte, Pine Ridge and Sandhills units. Prescribed Burns Planned for Indian Cave and Ponca State Parks

LINCOLN — The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will conduct prescribed burns in the oak woodlands at Indian Cave State Park (SP) and Ponca SP between March 17 and March 31. These low intensity burns are designed to reduce brush and small tree densities in the woodlands and will allow for oak tree regeneration, increase native wildflowers and enhance wildlife habitat.

Learn Outdoor Skills as a Family at Two Rivers SRA

LINCOLN – Learn outdoor skills as a family at the Becoming an Outdoors-Family workshop April 11-12 at Two Rivers State Recreation Area near Waterloo. This workshop teaches basic outdoor skills related to fishing, camping, kayaking, archery, hunting and hiking. The fee is $99 for a family of up to six members. LINCOLN – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will certify youth fishing instructors April 5 in North Platte. The free workshop will be held at the Mid-Plains Center for Enterprise, Room 202, at 1101 Halligan Drive, from 12:30-3:30 p.m. Youth fishing instructors will receive training and tools to conduct fishing clinics. Game and Parks Stresses Safety Following Weekend Fire at Branched Oak WMA

LINCOLN – The cause of a fire at Branched Oak Wildlife Management Area (WMA) over the weekend is under investigation. The fire started around 3:30 p.m. Sunday and burned around 1,000 acres, 325 of which were located on the WMA. The fire melted a plastic drainage tube at the WMA and destroyed approximately 1.25 miles of fence. It also caused damage to property on private land.
