LINCOLN, Neb. – Enjoy a day of history and food July 15 at central Nebraska’s Fort Hartsuff State Historical Park. A Dutch oven cooking demonstration will begin at 10:30 a.m., with three recipes available to sample. Humanities Nebraska will host a 3 p.m. program by author Jeff Barnes on his latest book, “Nebraska’s Landmark Buildings.” The park is located 6 miles southeast of Burwell in Valley County. A vehicle park entry permit is required.

Young zebra mussels detected at Cunningham Lake

LINCOLN, Neb. – Microscopic young zebra mussels, known as veligers, recently were detected by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission in a water sample collected at Glenn Cunningham Lake in late May. No adult zebra mussels were found in the lake. Field sampling for adult zebra mussels will be completed on the Omaha lake’s boat ramps, rocks and other hard structures over the next several weeks. LINCOLN, Neb. – With summer in full swing, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is reminding water lovers to be mindful of the state’s education requirements for boating. Nebraska law requires any motorboat or personal watercraft operator born after Dec. 31, 1985 to complete a boating safety course and be in possession of a course certificate. LINCOLN, Neb. – Riverview Marina State Recreation Area (SRA) in Otoe County is temporarily closed to the public. Rising water levels in the Missouri River led Nebraska Game and Parks Commission staff to close the area Tuesday. Riverview Marina SRA is adjacent to the Missouri River and offers river access. Capitol peregrine falcons’ second nesting attempt fails

LINCOLN, Neb. – A second nesting attempt this year by the peregrine falcon pair atop the Nebraska State Capitol Building in Lincoln has failed. The latest nesting attempt began near the end of May, when the female peregrine falcon laid three eggs in the nest box located on the Capitol’s 18th floor. EAB confirmed at Eugene T. Mahoney State Park

LINCOLN, Neb. – Emerald ash borer (EAB) was discovered at Eugene T. Mahoney State Park (SP) on June 6 and has been confirmed by a state entomologist. Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA) staff found EAB in a baited trap at the park’s Lakeside Campground. EAB is an invasive beetle native to Asia.
