The fish are biting and camping is just heating up. There are hikes to take, birds to see and even frogs to listen for. This time of the year is one of the best for all sorts of outdoor adventures here in Nebraska. However, some of us are already thinking about what we need to accomplish before hunting season resumes on September 1. We have less than 3 months to get ready – don’t ya know!
Big Game Applications for many of us (that is non-landowners) begins on June 12. This includes elk, pronghorn (antelope) and draw units for the popular Mule Deer Conservation Areas in the Platte and Frenchman Units as well as the Republican Mule Deer Unit. Even if its just to add another antelope preference point or elk bonus point – now’s the time to plan. You can find the lowdown on all this on our Hunting Seasons Page.
Of course, now’s the time to acquire a new rifle or bow for the fall big game seasons, too – and then do plenty of practicing. Not sure who collects the official data on this, but I’m sure those with a new gun or archery tackle experience an increased success rate the season immediately following the purchase. At least that is what I tell my significant other.
Don’t forget to dream a little. Get your name into the lottery for a Super Tag and/or Multi-Species Combo Tag. Applications for these are already underway. These special tags are an amazing opportunity to sample the Nebraska’s big game mixed bag and to do so over a two-year period.
