LINCOLN – Rainbow trout stocking in eastern Nebraska is winding down in preparation for the winter fishing season. These catchable-size stocked trout are approximately 10 inches in length. The following are the most recent stockings, including quantities:
Dec. 5 – Holmes Lake, Lincoln, 3,000; Bowling Lake south pond, Lincoln, 400; Lake Halleck, Papillion, 1,200; Dec. 3 – Standing Bear Lake, Omaha, 3,770; Dec. 1 – Crystal Springs middle lake, Fairbury, 1,200
As weather permits in the coming weeks, Standing Bear will receive an additional 3,730 trout. Eugene T. Mahoney State Park’s CenturyLink Lake will receive 3,500 fish.
Trout fishing is a great way to introduce children to fishing because simple and inexpensive equipment may be used. A spinning or spin-cast rod and reel with a hook baited with a worm will work well. Add a split shot a couple of feet above the hook and a bobber a couple of feet above the split shot. Trout also can be caught with spinners, salmon eggs, dough baits and artificial flies.
