LINCOLN – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will host seven free workshops about the power of pollinators and measures homeowners and others can take to protect them.
Pollinators are insects and animals that transport pollen between plants, ensuring that those plants produce fruit or seeds. Common pollinators include bees and butterflies. Pollinators are critical to our environment, food supply and economy, but their numbers are in decline.
By establishing backyard pollinator gardens as a source of food and shelter for pollinators, homeowners, community organizations, schools or churches can help protect pollinator populations. The free workshops, which will take place around northeastern Nebraska in June, July and August, will share information about the importance of pollinators and how to establish critical pollinator habitat in their own backyards.
Those who attend will receive a pollinator garden planting guide, a pollinator invertebrate identification book and milkweed seedlings. Milkweed is critical for monarch butterflies, as it is the exclusive food source for their larvae.
All workshops will take place from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Workshops dates and locations are:
June 1 – Norfolk Library; June 14 – Neligh Library; June 20 – Lied Battle Creek Library; July 26 – O’Neill Public Library; Aug. 2 – Bassett City Hall; Aug. 16 – Norfolk Library; Aug. 26 – Ponca State Park.
