Reel ’em in Roadtrip: Labor Day Weekend

With high expectations Commissioner Burke and I spent a few hours on the water at Johnson Lake to kick off the holiday weekend. Trolling is the method we prefer, however after two-plus hours we drew the big goose egg!

Saturday morning I left Johnson early to meet the Forney brothers and son Shane at Lake McConaughy. The walleye bite has been strong all summer and I always enjoy outings with a new group. Trolling nine hours produced four good catfish and, finally, the last fish for the day, a 27″ marble eye.

Sunday morning Commissioner Burke, son Logan and I were back on the water at Johnson. The fish were scattered off different points and would come two at a time ending with 13 large white bass and one drum.

Monday friend Bill Steffens and I again trolled Johnson but the bite again was very slow. Fisherman everywhere on the lake were struggling as we only boated one drum. So goes another great weekend on the water.

Nebraska Game and Parks District 6 Commissioner Lynn Berggren is in the midst of a “Reel ‘em in Roadtrip,” in which he and his are friends trying out the fishing at different Central Nebraska lakes. Over the coming weeks, he’ll be writing about his experiences. Check back to see where he’s been.
