Early Season is for the Birds

Man, woman and child! It is finally here! This early season on turkeys is just a hoot. A lot of fun but it will tax you. One day they can be gobbling like mad, walking about like a lost puppy, the next day they are back in large groups acting like they don’t know you from tree bark. Welcome to the early season!

The advantage we archers have is that we have the best chance of being in the field when “it” happens. The “it” I am referring to is when the large flocks of turkeys begin to break up as dominance is established, males start implementing a pecking order and the females are…well…”ready.”

This break up period can be the absolute best time to be in the woods. At some point, toms will literally come running to your call. Perhaps this weekend was that magic time for many youth who were hunting the youth season. I sure hope so!

Keep at it and don’t give up. That one day, one hour, one minute they do come running to the call makes all those early mornings worth while…not to mention a front row seat in nature’s grand theatre! Enjoy the hunt!
