Walgren Lake SRA to Reopen to Public Access

LINCOLN, Neb. – Walgren Lake State Recreation Area (SRA) in Sheridan County will reopen Oct. 17 following an agreement between the community group Friends of Walgren Lake and the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.

The group will keep open and maintain the SRA through April 30, 2014, after which Game and Parks will resume operation and maintenance.

On Aug. 30, Game and Parks announced the temporary closure of all services and vehicle access at 24 state recreation areas – including Walgren Lake SRA – and five state historical parks. Walgren Lake closed since Sept. 16.

The reason for the temporary park closures is to redirect Game and Parks staff and resources from the closed areas in an effort to reduce the more than $30 million backlog of deferred maintenance needs and meet compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and environmental requirements.

Several other communities have come forward to keep parks in their areas at least partially open.

“We are thrilled to work with another group of dedicated citizens, who have come forward to keep another park area open,” said Jim Douglas, director of Game and Parks. “We continue to be open to ideas for keeping our beautiful parks accessible to Nebraskans.”

Walgren Lake SRA is located 4 miles southeast of Hay Springs.
